Plastic bits cause recall of 60 tonnes of poultry

The products subject to recall bear establishment number “P-33901” inside the USDA mark of inspection

Foster Poultry Farms is recalling 131,880 pounds (60 tonnes) of frozen, ready-to-eat breaded chicken patties after US shoppers reported discovering pieces of clear plastic packaging in the products.

The US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA’s) Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) stressed in a 27 April notice that the recall was low risk. However, the food quality issue has involved a sizeable quantity of meat.

The recall affects frozen, ready-to-eat 5lb bags containing 20 pieces of “FOSTER FARMS Chicken Patties BREADED CHICKEN BREAST PATTIES WITH RIB MEAT”, with Best By date of 15 February 2018. The company, which is based in Farmerville, Louisiana, produced them on 15 February this year.

Consumer complaints

The problem was discovered when the firm received three consumer complaints on 22 March, 3 April and 15 April, reporting foreign materials in the chicken patty products. The foreign materials were pieces of clear, soft plastic that originated from the establishment’s packaging materials.

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. FSIS urged anyone concerned about an injury or illness to contact a healthcare provider.

It advised consumers who had purchased these products not to consume them and to either throw them away or return them to the place of purchase.
